Peanut butter earns its reputation on nutrition: roughly 25 g of protein and 50 g of fat per 100 g, and most of that fat is unsaturated rather than saturated. Those two issues, what manufacturers add and what moulds produce, are where an Indian jar of peanut butter differs from the idealised version. Both are visible if you know where to look on a label, and one of them is regulated by a limit most people have never checked.
What are the actual benefits of peanut butter?
The best-evidenced benefit is cardiovascular. A 2016 dose-response meta-analysis of 20 prospective studies found that each 28 g per day increase in nut intake was associated with a 29% lower risk of coronary heart disease, relative risk 0.71 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.63 to 0.80.
The same analysis reported a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular disease overall, 0.79 (0.70 to 0.88), and a 22% lower all-cause mortality, 0.78 (0.72 to 0.84). Stroke was the exception: 0.93 (0.83 to 1.05), a confidence interval that crosses 1 and so shows no clear effect.
Two caveats matter. These are observational cohorts, so they show association rather than proof of cause, and people who eat more nuts tend to differ in other ways. The studies also measured nuts broadly, not peanut butter specifically, and a jar with added sugar and hydrogenated oil is not the same food as a handful of peanuts.

The distinction in the last row matters. Extrapolating from a cohort study of nut eaters to a specific processed product is exactly the leap that marketing makes and evidence does not support.
Is peanut butter healthy, or just calorie-dense?
Both, and the two are not in conflict. At 588 calories per 100 g, peanut butter is one of the densest foods most people keep at home. Density is not a health verdict: it means portion size does more work here than ingredient quality does.
Two tablespoons on toast is a reasonable snack. Four spoons eaten straight from the jar while standing at the fridge is close to 400 calories, which is a meal. The food has not changed between those two scenarios, only the quantity.
Where the health question genuinely turns is the ingredient list. Peanut butter that is only roasted peanuts and salt behaves broadly like peanuts. Peanut butter with added sugar, hydrogenated fat and emulsifiers is a different product wearing the same name.
Does peanut butter in India still contain trans fat?
It should not, in meaningful amounts. FSSAI capped industrially produced trans fatty acids at 3% by mass of total oils and fats from January 2021 and at 2% from 1 January 2022, under the Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales Second Amendment Regulations gazetted on 3 February 2021. Dairy, meat and fish products are excluded from the cap.
Why this matters is not in dispute. WHO attributes more than 500,000 premature deaths from coronary heart disease each year to trans fat intake, and intake above 1% of total energy is associated with higher coronary heart disease mortality. Trans fat raises LDL cholesterol while lowering HDL, an unusually unfavourable combination.
One widely repeated claim needs correcting. In India a product cannot be labelled trans fat free simply by keeping the per-serving figure under 0.5 g, which is a United States rule. Under FSSAI’s Advertising and Claims Regulations, 2018, a “trans fat free” claim requires less than 0.2 g of trans fat per 100 g or 100 ml, and the same threshold governs FSSAI’s trans fat free logo.
The practical check is the ingredient list, not the claim. Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in a peanut butter is the only reason trans fat would be there at all, since peanuts contain none naturally.
What are aflatoxins and how much is allowed in India?
Aflatoxins are toxins produced by Aspergillus moulds that grow on groundnuts in warm, humid conditions, which describes most of India for much of the year. IARC classifies naturally occurring aflatoxins as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans, with liver cancer the principal concern.
India regulates them. Under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011, the aflatoxin limit for nuts is 15 micrograms per kg where they are destined for further processing and 10 micrograms per kg for ready-to-eat nuts. A 2018 draft amendment proposed revising these figures but remains a draft.

The gap between India’s limit and the EU’s is worth noticing: the EU allows less than half. Aflatoxin risk is a storage and sourcing problem rather than a recipe problem, which is why it is invisible on an ingredient list and only shows up in laboratory testing.
What do added sugar and palm oil do to a jar?
Plain peanut butter needs one ingredient: roasted peanuts. Salt is a reasonable second. Everything beyond that is there to fix texture, taste or shelf life, and each addition moves the nutrition panel away from the peanut.
Added sugar raises the carbohydrate figure directly and is the single easiest thing to spot, since ingredients are listed in descending order of weight. If sugar appears second, it outweighs everything except peanuts.
